BLOG | Why corporates need therapy.

Capitalism as we traditionally know it has had its roots in distorted ideas about who we are, what we need and what we aspire. How we find ourselves in its current narrative and the shapes we’ve let it take say so much more about its underlying reality:

.

  • Status is of course a distorted form of the longing to be meaningful.

  • Competition is the response to of the deeper belief that there’s not enough.

  • Profit is a fragmented idea of value.

.

Since we are detaching from these distorted truths, the current capitalism paradigm is coming to an end. Ushering in the transitory space between the story of the old and the story of the new.
.

We find ourselves right smack in the middle of the space between stories. A bit clueless, yet excited, disoriented, yet trusting, meeting the deafening silence as a threat looking to what we knew for safety, rather than an ally that guides us into the future. Yet, transition requires this space as room for change, it needs the silence to hear the new, It needs the room of grievance for the old, and the vulnerability of staying open minded to an emergent future rather than treading the unknown waters by practicing control mechanisms.
.

The exact same process of transition happens in human beings when they are on the verge of a break through. I’ve seen it often in my coaching practice. Right there in the midst of letting go of the old and embracing the new lies the deep and messy work that – if one makes the effort – never ceases to amaze and humble me as I witness how capable and creative we are in our individual growth. So individually, so in business. What else is a business other than a group of people that come together daily around a common goal?
.

Human evolution applies. And is asked to be tended to with great care and the right professionalism. The inherent message of personal confusion or dissatisfaction, messiness within team dynamics, or any organizational crisis situation is always to look deeper, beyond the phenomena we perceive and to follow in Einstein’s words: to see the world anew by tapping into another level of consciousness that had created the issues in the first place.
.

Once we see the limiting belief system that has subconciously been at the steering wheel of our behaviour, we can take up the courage to be vulnerable enough to heal from the broken ideas about our selves. The broken ideas that we took with us into all relationships that we engaged in, including our work relationships, where there is a collective breeding ground for a culture.
.

Any culture that has emerged from brokenness will reflect the same brokenness in its business – often manifesting as young people loosing their initial creativity and enthusiastic spirit, a general feeling of defeat and a loss of commitment, unhealthy power dynamics, or issues of trust towards each other and, many a times, towards leadership. A place for personality disorders to be confused with healthy behavior and for coping mechanisms to be awarded as being the norm.
.

Changing any culture for the better in any corporation, therefore, starts at making room for healing the broken story about ourselves by doing the deep and messy work of breaking habits, lifting the veil of limiting belief systems and move from coping mechanisms to authenticity. Adding profound depth to strategy and operations by:
.

  • A culture of self reflection and connection to another, establishing healthy human relationships.

  • Being in dialogue, making it possible to co-create solutions in joint responsibility.

  • Cultivating resilience by being vulnerable in navigating change.

  • Availing of full creativity by unlocking wholeness: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual intelligence.

.

Any culture that emerges from this place of wholeness advertises the same. This will attract the crowd and energy that will carry your brand further into the future, healthily and sustainably. And creating a new way of doing business. By being carried by meaning and significance. Living rather than surviving.
.

As we progress in this in depth work and as we heal, we transcend ourselves. Both individually and collectively. Eventually we come to a point where we realize that we are not here just to serve ourselves. We are here to gift from ourselves to a greater cause. Learning and experiencing that we have our unique place to take and our unique purpose to live in the world. Imagine what a bunch of people who’ve gifted themselves a culture of self reflection and dialogue – a healthy organization – that align themselves with a greater cause – a purpose – can do.
